What is the role of leadership during the transformation process?
Whether you are a Chief Executive Office (CEO) or Vice President (VP) of Development, you are responsible for guiding the organization through the transformation process. In Byron Tweeten's book, Transformational Boards, he addresses the role of leadership in change and transformation, he specifically discusses the agenda for the not-for-profit board of the future. He also focuses on the changing nature of these roles during transformation.
Leadership Roles: The following issues should be on not-for-profit board agendas:
- What is our current target market? Is it the market we choose to serve and represent? What are its needs and desires?
- How do our decisions about our market impact our mission, vision and values?
- Do we want to change any part of the organization to add value for our constituent (customer), and what does this mean related to policy, plans and operational performance?
- What are our current capabilities, and what changes, additions and endings need to take place in order to perform appropriately for our market?
- What leadership human resources systems and technology do we need to operate successfully?
- What processes should we redesign?
- What financial resources do we need in order to deliver quality end results and how do we expect to capitalize and operate the organization through a financial plan?
- Is our board organized appropriately?
- What is our role and duty on behalf of the public trust, and what are out next steps?
Based on the answers to these points, boards will need to reflect on their policies and resolutions for adjustments and refinements.
The role of the CEO in change and transformation
The CEO should have a very good understanding of the organizations designated marketplace and the ability to listen and interact within that marketplace. The CEO must be strong enough to run the operation but interdependent enough to be responsible to the board's direction and policies. Both groups, however; must be responsive to societal change that could affect the organization to ensure that the transformation process occurs.
The role of the management team in change and transformation
The leadership of the organization must then cultivate, coach, or if necessary, bring in the management team. As stated previously this group will direct and oversee the changes defined by leadership and be responsible for the employees who must implement the transformation process.
Only when all groups are working together in a symbiotic relationship will successful change occur.
